Couple of Sketches on my way to OZ
So I’ve gotten into the Wizard of Oz a bit lately. Given that it’s the 70th anniversary of the famous Victor Fleming film, there has been a lot of coverage recently, and I started digging online like I usually do. I did happen to be lucky enough to stumble upon this little gem from Shanowar and Young - and it really got me inspired. So I started some master study sketches of some of Young’s work and this is how they turned out.
Here’s the first image that I did - starting with light marker and working into darker and some inks. The spiraly nature of all the clouds and foliage doesn’t show through in the smaller res images linked here - I’m holding those back a while till I’ve had a chance to refine them some. See some more after the break.

The second one. Also pulling from Skottie’s work. It was nice to have a base settled by way of their graphic novel so that I could just work with the markers and inks, without having to do too much thinking at the start.

The last one for now. This is the image that I started to pull away from the existing reference a bit, and for that reason I think I like this one the most. I’lll be posting some alternate treatments in a day or more, with some overlays applied that give it some color.

I’m really diggin the sketches. Great job. I like the use of darker and lighter line detail in the top sketch. It really seems to move the eye through the canvas.
