PIX3LED # 5 Mega Man

Long ago in a galaxy far far away…I made a choice. I was about 10 years old and was saving my allowance for quite some time to buy a game for my NES. I’d narrowed it down to just two titles: Mega Man and Blaster Master. Once I got to the store I saw them both sitting behind the glass, staring at me, commanding me to make a decision.

After was seemed like an eternity, I finally picked a game an brought it to the counter. I traded all the cash I had for the winning title. Still to this day I have absolutely no clue why on earth I skipped over both titles and picked Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle by Kemco. No Joke.

I eventually picked up Mega Man 3 a few years later, but I’ve still never owned that original NES version. Mega Man has kept amazing staying power through out the years. The largest support for this argument is the success of Mega Man 9 which launched last fall. I love playing these titles becuase of the very simple platforming idea that is made super difficult by design. I think that a lot of 2D platformers have taken notes from the MM rule book.

Nearly all of the MM titles have recieved amazing soundtracks, with the classics getting tracks from Manami Matsumae [MM1, MM2] and Yoshihiro Sakaguchi [MM1, Duck Tales]. If you are a real classic NES music fan, you can find a lot of Mega Man tracks have gotten a little lift over at OCREMIX.
