Video games are under constant critique. The gamers that play them are in my opinion some of the toughest critics out there. The reviewers who have the job of reviewing games are sometimes just as tough, and frequently as sloppy. The critiques these these critics give are easily collected, and are often published online in one of the thousand video game review sites, and often without review or reform. Many of these reviews are misinformed, poorly written and almost always varied from publication to publication.
I have been pondering how this process can be improved. One of my coworkers had an idea to create a review site for reviews. Give them a dose of their own medicine. You know, point out review sites that are inaccurate or uninformative, overly generous or brutal, inconsistent or sloppy. Rate them. Rate entire sites or even the reviews themselves.
I have also been thinking that in some cases team size, development time and budget should be public with each title. I think this would make a big difference to gamers and reviewers alike when they judge a product - if they know it is a budget title, with a budget sized team, with a rushed production schedule. Does this make a bad game any better? Nah. But I think gamers will have a better idea of what they are playing if they have this information… maybe not.
