A good game is more than a designer. It is more than an art team and a programming team. It is beyond the QA and the production team. The key factor for success frequently in the hands of the publisher - the wise old entity who writes the checks to pay the developer to make the game, and because of this power also is the ultimate decision-maker during production. Some games have benefited from a publisher that was willing to take chances. Others have suffered.
Unfortunately, the publisher answers to the public, and in a strange sort of way their decision-making hands are tied as well. With each game publishers are after the bullet list, that is, the list of key features that will persuade an individual to part with their money in exchange for some entertainment. (more…)
