GDC 2008

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Early morning. I had a 6AM flight out to San Francisco for the 2008 Game Developers Conference. Most of the events don’t begin until tonight, so I have had a free day in the City. I was just here a few months ago, so most of the area is still familiar. There are a few things that I did not get to do last time that I have already checked off my list.

Looking ahead, there is a lot going on this week. Tomorrow starts with a session on creating centralized art databases and using these as a method of improving production time. We have been toying with this process already. There is a session on crunch - it may be the same old lecture but I might drop in to see if there are any new perspectives being tossed around. Pandemic will be hosting a session on outsourcing practices - as a formerĀ  art director this is one that is pretty important to me these days and a process I want to be sure is handled properly at BLS. There are a few others on training, and startups that I might drop in on. I will write on those as soon as I have something to say.

What’s in a Wiimote?

After my virtual console controller died, I went searching for some “do it yourself” fixes for the lil beast. Although I didn’t find any fixes for the controller, I did find an interesting article on what goes into a Wiimote.

Turns out there are a lot of components of the controller that are made here in the US. There is even a component that supports vocal inputs - this is something that I am interested in as a developer, but we don’t use just yet.

At any rate, check out the article over at Fortune to poke around and peek at the guts of the controller. They list the various parts, their cost and what talents they provide to the game console.
