I’m a generalist. How about you?

From a great little interview of Facebook’s Ben Barry… pulled out one paragraph that spoke to me, as I feel the same way. Full article link below.

I consider myself a generalist. I’m interested in all sorts of stuff. I write code. I screen print. I dabble in letterpress and bookbinding. I sort of want to do it all and also be good at everything. I have some close friends that are incredibly talented specialists and I get sort of envious. They’re super-badass at one or two things. They’ve been able to focus and become experts, but I guess there are too many things I’m interested in learning. I’m thankful that the current technology trends at play in the world have made it possible for me to dabble in these different areas without having to specialize.

Getting into Games

Hi Parent!

Thanks for reaching out! I’m happy to hear your child has an interest in a career in video games. I’m always happy to talk with up and coming game developers – but my schedule often gets in the way.

There is a fantastic resource online called the http://www.gamecareerguide.com/ that is my go-to source when helping direct parents or interested students through the prospect of a career in games. Take a look through that site and let me know if you have any other questions.

I’m happy to take a phone call  if there are questions that site doesn’t answer.

Thanks and good luck!

Finally got a working wordpress app

This post was lovingly authored from an iphone, which happens to actually work; whereas my android version did not.

In other news I installed a proof of concept for a mobile game we are working on on the same phone earlier this morning.

Great things are in store. Stay tuned.

Cell Phone Triple Crown!

I’ve just switched to iPhone. After an hour I can tell there are some things I already miss…

  • No Grooveshark.
  • No Flash.
  • No Back Button [come on apple... didn't we already go over this with the mouse?]
  • Most actions are performed at the top of the screen [where my droid had buttons below so you aren't reaching across the device to navigate.
  • No side swiping. [scroll screens left to right... like dates in the calendar].
more on this later.

Business Journal Honors a Gamer

I was honored by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of their 30 under 30. The full interview doesn’t appear on the site, so I thought I would post it here. I’m happy to be counted among them!

STLBJ:Please write a 100- to 125-word personal statement of who you are, including biggest accomplishment in your career, but you can include whatever you’d like to emphasize.

Matt: I was born along-side an Atari. I went to grade school with the Nintendo.  I played on the monkey bars with the Sega Genesis, and I learned to drive with the Nintendo 64 riding shotgun [not literally… I’m trying to be clever here…].  I pledged Phi Delta Theta at Missouri State University with the PS2 and when I joined the founders of video game developer Black Lantern Studios; I fulfilled my dreams of developing games on the video game consoles that would follow. I’m not a nerd really; I just like wearing flip-flops to work, and enjoy making money by making games.

Artists, get out your Honeysuckle

Gotta say, I think I’m a fan.

Via TAXI.

PANTONE has just announced the color of the year for 2011: Honeysuckle, a “dynamic reddish pink”. The color is known specifically as PANTONE 18-2120 TCX.

The company predicts that we will be seeing a lot of this color, in fashion, homeware, beauty products and so on, reports The Wall Street Journal.

In arriving at its prediction, PANTONE polled graphic, industrial, fashion and other designers to “forecase the colors that will have broad appeal”, the Journal said.

Note to Self – FileZilla Pain

I spent about 4 hours with our company site trying to migrate to a new server. All was well except the flash files weren’t loading at all. I couldn’t help but wonder what was different from the old server to the new that might cause such a problem.

I suspected the swfobject script that I’d had previous issue with … nothing. I tried case matching, file path checks, absolute linking and nothing was working. I consulted our ever wise IT director – nothing.  I checked the server settings and updated my flash player… nothing. I checked off site and flushed my DNS, cleared my cache… NOTHING.

Raitheoshow RSS

BooksI get asked a few times per month [from varying sources] what magazines I subscribe to, or what books I read to stay current. While I love Game Developer and I thought Outliers was fine fare – I have been ditching the paper and press more and more over the last few months and have finally subscribed to some RSS feeds.

RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. read the full report at wikipedia

I post each feed to my iGoogle home page. Seeing all new entries on the page is convenient, but can be distracting so I only have them load with Firefox. I use Chrome to do all of my quick online activities such as searching and running grooveshark – and leave Chrome set to load the classic home page. So, what do I actually follow?
